Interview de Brian Hastings

Q: You had a pretty big PLO month awhile back, but how do you think your game has changed since then?

A : I had a big month back then, but I was very fortunate. I realize now that I really didn't know what I was doing. I was playing way over aggressively and just hitting a fortunate run of cards. Now, on the other hand, I really feel like my PLO game is world class. I've beaten some very tough competition this month, and although 15k hands isn't a huge sample size in PLO, I feel like I've played very well. I think regulars who play with me would agree. The major adjustments I've made are cbetting less, making more big folds, and picking better spots to bluff in general. Cbetting too much was a major leak for two reasons: I was making unprofitable cbets myself, and I was incorrectly assuming others were doing the same, so I was bluff raising too light. It took a while to develop a feel for other players' ranges in various spots in PLO, but I think I have it down pretty good now.

Q: What do you feel are some common mistakes that players might be making while playing PLO, but might not recognize right away?

A: Cbetting too much is one. It's just not profitable to cbet as much in PLO as it is in NLH. Another is calling with too many hands out of position. I've always done a pretty good job of not falling into this trap, but many players, even at the highest stakes, make this mistake. Position is very important in PLO and calling marginal hands frequently out of the blinds is simply not a profitable strategy.

Q: What advice would you give to people just wanting to learn PLO?
Where should they start?

A: Start out by playing tight until you develop a feel for the game. I started out playing way too loose and it cost me eventually. I was spewing in many spots for a long time. If you start out nitty you won't be making major mistakes and you can still be profitable in small stakes games just by nut peddling. Once you gain experience you can loosen up a bit. Also, hand values are very different than in NLH. It is very often correct to fold the 2nd nuts in PLO, and this is a mistake beginners often make. For example if 4 players see a QcTc9s flop and you're first to act with J8xx no clubs, the best play is to check/fold against many players. This is difficult for beginners to grasp but crucial to success in PLO.

Q: Being very successfully in NLHE and PLO, how do you balance jumping from one game to the next? Do you feel you play better when you focus on one game solely for a certain time before playing the other form?

A: I try to only play one or the other at a given time, but sometimes there will only be 1 or 2 good games of each running so I'll play both. I'm fairly comfortable with it now, but especially when starting out I'd recommend only playing one or the other at a given time.

Q: Lastly . you've made it very public that you've lost a lot of money playing PLO since your big month last year, so how do you keep motivated to learn the game and constantly improve with all the high swings involved?

A : I play poker for two reasons: money and competition. I'm a very competitive person and have always been that way. I played 4 sports when I was younger but I'm not the most athletic person so once I got to high school I had to find different means of competition. I played high school golf and obviously started to play poker as well. 2007 was not kind to me in PLO, as my opinion of my own game was too high due to my very successful December '06 and I played in some games that were way too tough for my skill level. I finally realized this after several straight losing months and worked on my game a bunch at 25/50. The games were very tough for the most part and provided me a good learning ground. With my winnings in NLH I was able to take some lumps until I finally started winning in the game in 2008. I think I lost money in PLO in January but won over 100k in February and am having the best poker month of my life now.

That was pretty long winded, but basically it's just competitive drive. I had already been a top player in NLH and wanted a new challenge. Now due to the increasing difficulty of the NLH games I think I am more profitable in high stakes PLO games than NLH, at least in non-HU games. I may also try to learn more games for a new challenge.

Below is a graph from Brians first 10 days of play so far this month at PLO.
