I'm a big calling station
Hey,
I know I'm a big calling station, I love calling but it would be better if I could find the fold button sometimes.
I don't mind calling with marginal holdings if I think I have the best hand especially when vilain's range is polarized meaning he either has the nuts or nothing. I've made big call down with Jack High but also many bad calls. I remember calling Nyan down with Ace high who was bluffing with a better ace.
Anyway it works pretty well in small stakes where people are not really making thin value bets but it might be a huge leak in higher stakes. People are going to read my hand pretty well and value bet their hand accordingly and merge their range pretty well.
Here's a hand I played yesterday where I should def have folded to his river raise.
When he raises the river my first thought is "OMG he has the flush, I guess I have to fold" but then I try to find reasons to make a call.
We were deep so I thought he would raise the flop or turn with a flush trying to get all the money in. I basically had a bluff catcher with my top two pair because he's never raising a worse hand for value on that board. Even if it's a really bad spot to bluff raise, I tanked and called. I should def have folded that river!
And sometimes you make big calls and you look like a genius.
B Buddy used to play in higher stakes and I know he's not afraid of making huge bluff if he thinks his opponent can't call.
So I raise pp8 UTG and B Buddy 3bets from the blinds. I elect to call and play the pot in position with a good but not great hand.
I find a good flop for my hand with no overcards. He cbets like I would do with his whole range so I call.
Turn T and he checks. There is not much value in betting that turn since he's never going to call with worse so I check.
River Q and he SNAP shoves. Before making a decision we need to think about the hand.
1/ My hand is pretty face up. When I call his cbet and check the turn I never have a great hand and he knows that. He prolly thinks my range look like a marginal one pair hand.
2/ Because of (1) the Q is a good card to bluff. Keep in mind that he thinks I have 66,77,88,99
3/ He snap shoved and that's a good timing tell. He didn't think about it and his whole stack was in the middle within one second. I mean if you really have that good of a hand wouldn't you think about your bet sizing?
Because of those three points I made the call and won the pot.
It's really important to read your opponent hand but also try to figure out what your opponent thinks you have and how he would play the hand you think he has knowing your hand.
I know that you know that I know blablablabla
Anyway I need to ask pokerstars for a fold button because mine doesn't really work.
